TIME & STILLNESS
TIME + STILLNESS
There is an added nuance between the photograph and video, and additional element of reality, an awareness of time and space that exists in a video that doesn't necessarily exist within a photograph. I wanted to reference that leap between the two mediums with a similar parallel gap between traditional painting and photography.
Painting can potentially preserve the visual characteristics of an object or person but yet will never achieve the indexical properties that a photograph can offer. As such, there is a component of 'the real' that a video suggests in comparison to a photograph due to the element of time.
In this piece, I reference art historical elements (Dutch still life painting, chiaroscuro, and aspects of Impressionism caused by the changing and fleeting light).
We can observe as time progresses, the flowers slowly wither as light begins to fade. The piece permits us to witness change, movement, decay-it allow us to experience the fragility and inevitability of passing time that traditional painting and still photography cannot offer.
